COCKSFOOT.

Cocksfoot is ripening fast and cutting is pretty general. At Leßon's during the past week, an agent of the Waikato Lands Company purchased 100 bags of old seed at 3£d, and we hear that there is likely to be a fair demand from Auckland. It is said over 1000 men have come from the Plains, but all eeein to have found work. The following circular has been sent to several cocksfoot merchants here : —

" Christchurch, Jan. 21, 1889.

"The Executive Committee of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Jubilee Exhibition, being desirous of erecting a large and handsome trophy in the Canterbury Court at tbe forthcoming Exhibition, requests me to write and ask if you will kindly furnish them with a few full sheaves of any specially fine samples of cocksfoot grass ; also cleaned samples of tbe seed with particulars of the weight and locality from whence taken. The committee will be thankful for your kind assistance in the matter, and will be glad to hear from you at your early convenience,—Yours faithfully,

" J. P. Kinsey, Secretary." It is to be hoped that growers of: good samples will take the hint, and forward as requested. It is sure to do good, not only to the individual sender, but to the Peninsula growers as a whole. The superiority of our seed is undoubted, and the more who know it the better for us all. Mr Henning, agent of the U.S.S. Co., informs us that he will kindly forward b. mples sent to his care to Christchurch free' of cost.
