PRESBYTERIAN.

The children of this school assembled in full force at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the Manse grounds and presented quite a gay appearance. After singing "they disported themselves as only children can do. Some found a cool shade from the broiling: sun under the shrubs, while others climbed the trees, and others roamed along the creek as hopeful young: Waltonians. Suddenly the pleasant rambles were interrupted by the summons of the young ladies wTio had provided an ample repast for juvenile appetites. After all were satisfied the little ones and big: ones betook themselves to the hifl which some of the latter found Btiff climbing, but which the young ascended with great spirit. Here they were rewarded for their toil however, by tbe cool shade and beautiful view. The young: were eager to enter the contests of the day, and though very warm the fleet • ness of youth did not suffer much incon* veniehce. In the big boys' race James Bruce was king of the ring, and were it not for an accident John Welsh would probably come next to him. but Fred. Staples outran his rival and succeeded in getting that coveted prize. In the 89nior girls' race there were several competitors and a very lively scene was witnessed. For a time the issue was uncertain but eventually it was seen that Miss Lizzie Billens took the lead and came t*. the goal considerably ahead of ten others. In the next contest Miss Wood of Dunedin came to the front after a close run with Misses Alger, Bella Welsh and others who ran well. In the junior boys' race .Robert Black and others ran with great eagerness, and the former acored a point ago inst bis companions. The most interesting and amusing was the race of the very little ones who ran with wonderful spirit, and as they were all successful they obtained prizes which made them supremely happy. The day was now racing to a close and the children having enjoyed tbe games all assembled to tea. Before dispersing the children were provided with bags of eatables. The most, enjoyable day, tbe pleasant grounds, the happy arrangements all added to the comfort and pleasure of old and young. The proceedings terminated by singing " Shall we gather at the River," and prayer.
