AKAROA LIGHTHOUSE.
(TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL.) Sib, —I think it would be a very good plan if a petition were got up, urging on the Government the necessity of having a lighthouse on the north head of our harbour, and getting'it signed by the masters of all vessels trading here, and I am sure if it were forwarded to Lyttelton, it would be numerously signed by captains of vessels there. This being the only port of refuge between Port Chalmers and Lyttelton, the want of a light is severely felt by masters of vessels, and it was only last winter that the Kingarooma and Easby were heading into a southerly gale all night, a few miles from our harbour, which they could not attempt to make for want of a light, and a short time previous to that it leaked out that one of the steamers trading here, had in the darkness, gone into Damans Mistake. I expect if she had left her bones there, we should have had a lighthouse ere this; but that is no reason why we should want to lock the door after the steed is stolen. Hoping that some one better able than myself will take up the subject. I am, &c, G.J.B.
