ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

To the E'litor of the Auckland Times. air. editor, — [ beg through the medium of your paper to call public attention to the imperfect manner in winch the only danger in this harbour is marked, viz : the reef below the Basiion. Any vessel, with the wind dead down, stands direct upon it; and the present beacon, in some positions, cannot be seen half a mile by thoti&even who know its situation; much less by a stranger jjllind it is of such a description that, when seen lie worn ! not be aware that it denoted a danger. A White Black buoy moored off, might be seen two miles, a*d‘4he expense of placing one, in three fathoms good holding ground, would not exceed £3O to £35. I know three vessels that have entered the port without being aware of the existence of the reef; but should one vessel receive damage, it will be a serious detriment to the trade, and give a bad name to as sale and easy a port as a master need wish to enter. W. C. DALDY, Master, Schooner Shamrock. [We are sure, that the people of Auckland are obliged to our correspondent for this new instance of his zeal in their service; and we doubt not that it will meet with a correspondent cordial good will by the Government. It is a matter of the utmost importance to us. At present we are greatly depending on the little coasting trade which is driven. Insurance, upon the vessels engaged in it, can only be made in Sydney; and can only be effected there, at the enormous premium of twelve per cent —this is for our eastern coast—while policies for our westers ports are refused altogether.—lf then any accident should occur, it will be, if possible, more disastrous to our harbour, than to the unlucky owners themselves.— Ed.]
