FRUIT DESPATCH.

Fruit was despatched from the Alexandra railway station as follows :

This Last Season Season. February 396 tons . 232 tons Week. Ending. March 4th 81 tons 74 tons.

The despatch of fruit for last week was only 7 tons ahead of the total recorded for the corresponding week of last season. The first week of March last season was particularly good, the season being later, last year late peaches were going forward at that time, which would account for the enhanced total of 74 tons.

. Monday morniug of this week 11 tons were despatched, the cold boisterous weather prevailing over the week-end would affect the picking.

Messrs Griffiths, fruit salesmen, Wellington, wired at the end of last week that all consignments of peaches and nectarines, were arriving in bad order owing to brown rot and under such circumstances consignments were not recommended.

D. W. M'Kay, Ltd., Invercargill, report : —Extra heavy supplies of fruit have reached the market during the week. Tomatoes especially are in oversupply and are selling at low rates. Following are the approximate wholesale prices : —-Apples : Sturmers ex-cool store os to 6s per case ; new season's Scarlets 9s to lis 6d; Worcester Permains 9s to lis; cookers 6s to 7s. Pears : Half cases 2s 6d to ss; bushels 6s to Bs. Peaches : Crated 3d to 4d; cases to 3id. Apricots to 4id, Plums ; Jam lid to 2id ;" desserts' to 4id. Nectarines 3d "to 4d. Grapes ; Blapk Hamburg Is 4d. Tomatoes ? Nelsons 3s to 5s per case ; Canterburys lid to 2^(1: Central 2*d to 4d; looal hothouse 6d.

Messrs Wallace and Coy., Wellington, wired on Monday : —Supply stone fruit increased last week but unsatisfactory weather conditions affected the demand. Continuous shipments recommended—greengages 12s, 13s ; Ogdens, Pukes Monarch, ICrks, Ponds 6s, 7s, Diamond Coes, os, 6s ; Magnums 6s, 8s ; nectarines 7s 6d, 12s 6d ; peaches 5s to 9s.
