(Own Correspondent). Very severe gales were experienced here during last week, and were followed by cold squally weather. The fruit crop is looking splendid and promises to surpass that of last year. The distribution of the output, which is always a perplexing problem to tho grower, is on a fair way to be solved this season, and a scheme is at present on foot, by which growers will receive a better return than has hitherto been the case. A local business man has taken the matter up and the local Association is co-operatiug with him. A monster meeting of all interested in sport was held on last Wednesday, when a new sports club was formed, taking over the funds of the Cycling and Athletic Clubs recently dissolved. Mr W. Bain was elected president, and Mr J. Faigan secretary. The new club will hold its meeting on Boxing Day, when £7O prize money will be given, and Ihe events include a £'1(! ShelHeld.
The members of the Loyal Roxburgh j Lodge of Oddfellows entertained the | Foresters' Lodge at a progressive euchre I party on their last lodge night. Forty | members participated in the games, j which consisted of a competition between each lodge, and at the call of time it was. fouud that Mr M'Cullock (M.tr.1.0.0.F.) had secured most games, with Mr H. Craig (A.0.F.) second. Both gentlemen received a prize. Supper was then dispensed and was followed with a programme of musical items, ! terminating with Auld Lang Syne. , The local bachelors held their annual I ball on Thursday last, and the committee -had the pleasure of seeing their efforts crowned with success more than anticipated. The gathering was one of the largest ever seen in the hall, and all present enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Excellent music was supplied by Miss M'MuUiu (piano), Messrs Roggorio and M'Elligott (violius), and Mercer (cornet). A very distressing accident happened jm .Labor Day to Mr R. Leece, of Oamaru, a.young gentleman well-known by many of this district and son of our genial constable, Mr Jas. Leece. With a companion he had been spending the holiday shooting; and returning home one of the guns went off discharging the contents of one barrel in his arm. The injury was of such a serious nature that it was found necessary to amputate the limb just above the elbow. Much sympathy is felt for Mr Leece in his affliction.
