The Hon. George Jones (of the Oamaru Mail) has purchased that very old-established newspaper the Southland Daily News, which will be placed under the literary, charge of Mr W. J. Jones on his return next month from his trip abroad. , It is understood that the price paid was ,£31,000 "The anticipated improvement in th e import market is not yet strong in evidence; though in some quarters a more buoyant tone is reported,' : says the Trade Review, in its current issue. " The dairy trade is becoming active, and in another month or so the butter money circulating will give an impetus to country trade. In the soft goods branch the season's trade, so far, has been somewhat quiet, but better in the country than in town, where stocks are still rather heavy. The general prospects of the produce season, however, are distinctly cheerful, and a more decided improvement is lojked forward lo with confidence " The bankruptcy returns for the Otago and Southland district for the past quarter are as follow : - Bankruptcies unclosed at the end of the preceding quarter, 53 ; bankruptcies closed during the quarter, two ; number of new bankruptcies during quarter 15 ; total number of bankruptcies in hand at the end of the quarter, 06; total amount of assets realised, £'2148 7s lid ; total amount paid in dividends, ,£2114 19s 3d. During the previous quarter of this year there were 11) new bankruptcies. The assets realised amounted to £4373, and the dividends paid to £722 0s lid. The returns for the quartetended September 30, 1908, are as follow : New bankruptcies, 13 ; assets realised, £778 7s Id ; dividends paid, £3977 lis 4d. It is stated that in all likelihood Parliament will be asked during the coming session lo sanction the publication by the Commerce and Tourist Division of an improved monthly leaflet of trade statistics. The new leillt will probably be somewhat on the lines of the monthly bulled.i issued in New South Wales i-\>r instance, there is a probability thftt the import side of business will receive s,oruc attention, {he lack of information in this respect having been frequently commented upon. There is evidently, however (says the New Zealand Times), no intention of burdening the publication with all the figures which are included in the one issued in New South Wales, it being felt that they would only delay the issue and serve no very good end. E/icouraging support has been given to the project of the Canterbury Trades Council to, establish a newspaper in the interests of. Labor.
