The Aged Poor.

HOME FOR THE AGED AT DUNEDIN.

It is not perhaps generally known to many of our readers in Central Otago that a home for the aged poor—founded by and entitled " The Little Sister s of the Poor"—has been established at Anderson'a Bay, Dunedin. At the present time, eighteen people, some blind and others crippled, are quartered and being cared for at this home, and in consequence of the intention to increase the accommodation and provide room for more of the aged desirous of joining the home, the public are being called upon to help in this worthy object. With this in view, two of the sisters arrived in Alexandra on Monday evening and are canvassing the town and surrounding districts, and a visit will also be made to Olyde, Cromwell, and the Upper Olutha Valley. To give our readers an idea of the object of the home, we publish the following particulars, which will prove of interest :- The Institute of the Little Sisters of the Poor was founded in 1840 at St. Servan, in Brittany, Its object is to provide homes for the aged poor of both sexes, irrespective of religion, to feed them, clothe them, and minister to all their wants. The Little Sisters of the Poor have no funds or income whatever. They support their aged inmates by whatever public charity affords them, collecting daily from house to bouse alms in money, ur any-

thing that may be offered them. Provided the applicants are destitute and respectable old people, incapable of e gaming their own livelihood, and over 60 years of age, they are fit objects for the Home of. the Little Sisters of the Poor. This work of charity, baa gradually spread over France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, England, Ireland, America, Africa, Asia a.id Oceania. The Little Sisters have new 300 houses, containing many thousands of aged poor who have found a comfortable home for their declining years.

Their present home at Anderson's Bay being much in debt, all contributions will be very thankfully received for the purpose of paying off the debt, as well as for the support of the poor under their care.
