Roxburgh Notes.

(Own Correspondent.)

The weather during the past week has been quite tropical and a continuance of it will bring fruit in very soon now.

At the Methodist Church, Coal Creek, on the ioth inst, Miss Hannah Tamblyn, of Mt. Hope, Coal Creek, was united in wedlock to Mr Geo. Henry, of Otautau. Rev. W. Greenslade performed the ceremony, which was witnessed by a large gathering of friends of the contracting parties. The gathering after the ceremony adjourned to Mt. Hope gardens, wheie afternoon tea was laid, after which the bridal party took their departure for Edievale en route for the South, where the honeymoon will be spent.

Citizens were rather unceremoniously disturbed from their mid-day meal on the nth by the sudden ringing of the fire bell, and a rush for the street soon revealed the presence of a fire in the stable of the Albion Hotel. With commendable promptitude the Brigade turned out and very soon made its presence felt before any serious damage was done. There was a horse in the stable at the time, which fortunately escaped with a light singeing. The Mutual Improvement Society is holding an invitation social in the hall on the 25th inst. The gathering is to take the form of a musical evening with games and a debate for an hour. The subject is " Should Bachelors be Taxed," and the principals are Mr F. Darling (affirmative) and Mr H. Waigth (negative). The society now comprises 92 members, and as each enjoys the privilege of inviting three friends the gathering at the social is expected to be a large one. It was unamimously decided at the society's last meeting, which was well ..attended, to continue the debates right throughout the year. A meeting of the Athletic Sports Club was held on Saturday evening last. A statement of the recent sports was presented, showing a credit balance of £ls 5s gd on the meeting. The secretary was voted £l and the Brass Band £% for their services.

A joint meeting of all the clubs in the district is convened for Saturday the 27th. The business to be brought forward is to make arrangements ior having the grounds placed in charge of a competent caretaker. A roadrace under the auspices of the Cycling Club will be held on next Saturday evemner, the 20th inst. A large party of anglers, local and visiting, went to Lake Onslow on the 15th for a week's fishing. The Lake is in capital order this season, a small party at Christmas securing over four cwt. for a few days.
