EAST SCHOOL

BREAK-UP CEREMONY PRESENTATION OF AWARDS Pupils past, present and future, with a sprinkling of “other” parents and teachers, gathered at the Ashburton East School for the break-up ceremony yesterday afternoon. The gathering was held in the open air on the assembly area at the front of the new school, and conditions generally were most pleasant, except for a rather keen easterly wind.

Mr A. M. Sutherland, chairman of the school committee, presided, and the principal speaker was Captain E. Thomas, of the Salvation Army. Captain Thomas, in a brief but effective address, illustrated with apposite stories and appropriate references to the spirit and purpose of the pioneer settlers, urged on the children, and particularly those who were leaving the school, the importance of putting first things first, of having a serious purpose in their lives, and of remembering their school and striving in all things to keep its name high. Mr Sutherland, in his opening remarks, st&ted that the present breakup was the first to be held at the new school, and expressed the opinion that the excellent scholastic record of the pupils that year had been influenced by the lovely and pleasant environment in which the children had worked. The speaker paid high tribute to the teaching staff for their work during the year. The Mayor, Mr E. C. Bathurst, congratulated the school on its good fortune' in having at last such fine grounds .and buildings, and urged all who could to attend at least some of the Centennial functions in Christchurch.

Mr J. E. Fraser, headmaster, thanked all who had made the year such a successful one, and urged those leaving to continue their education; for, he said, the most worthwhile jobs needed educated people. He asked senior pupils to remember that folk were judged by their behaviour, not by what they said about themselves.
