RELIGIOUS COOPERATION

PROMOTION BY AMERICAN GROUP A programme of understanding and co-operation among members of the Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish religions is being promoted by a church group at the University of California, Los Angeles. Called the University Religious Conference, this organisation works to further the basic religious principles common to all faiths. Official representatives on this institution include one clergyman each from Baptist, Congregational, Disciple, Jewish, Mormon, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Protestant Episcopal, Catholic, and Unitarian Churches. The headquarters building and the student programme are jointly financed by these church groups, the “Los Angeles Times” reports. The charter of the conference states that “true religion” is considered one of the greatest foundations of all human society. It adds that “ the preservation and development of religious convictions are essential,” and their “observance and understanding are highly conducive to more perfect brotherhood between all people.” One phase of the conference’s activities is carried on by teams of four to six students of different racial and religious backgrounds.' They discuss inter-racial and inter-religious problems before school assemblies, civic groups, and public meetings. Various teams have travelled throughout the United States, addressing audiences totalling hundreds of thousands.
