CONDUCT OF WAR IN KOREA

Questions in Commons

(Bpecial Correspondent—N.Z.P.A.). (Rec. 8.20 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 21

Several questions were asked in the House of Commons concerning the United Nations direction to General Mac Arthur on the limits of his advance into Northern Korea.

Mr D. Donnelly (Labour) asked the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr Davies, whether he would inquire what the Security Council’s instructions had been.

Mr Davies said the conduct of operations in Korea had been entrusted to General MacArthur by the Security Council, and it was for him to decide how best to employ his forces to achieve the United Nations" objectives.

Mr Donnelly: “In view of the fact that General MacArthur has overtly disobeyed his - Commander-In-Chief about Formosa (cries of No! No! and Order! Order!) and had to be rebuked for it (renewed cries of Order!) what assurances can the Government give that there would be no repetition of that kind of thing?”

Mr Davies: “I cannot accept the statement which has been made.” Mr Speaker: “Where General MacArthur is acting as Britain’s servant, it is possible he might be criticised in this House, but where he is acting as the servant of the United Nations, it is not in order.”
