Otago National Savings A national savings drive for £50,000 in Otago concluded last night, when total deposits amounted to £71,859. The sum of £29,840 was deposited' yesterday.—P.A.

J.P. Association Proposed Ashburton Justices of the Peace met yesterday to consider the formation of an association and preliminary details were discussed, after which Messrs N. R. Farrant, G. Kelly and T. L. Crooks* were appointed a committee to make further inquiries and possibly arrange for a visit by a speaker from another association.

Petrol Rumour Denied

A rumour that petrol rationing will be imposed again went round Invercargill late yesterday and caused what resellers desribed as a “fair bit of panic buying.” When the report was referred to the Minister of Supply (the Hon. C. M. Bowden) in Wellington, he said: “I don’t know anything about it.”—P.A.

Wages of Club Employees Wage increases of up to 4s a week for kitchen staff are provided in the New Zealand (except Weetland) Chartered Clubs’ Employees’ _ Award, issued by the Court of Arbitration, and operative from yesterday. The award was made on.behalf of the New Zealand Federated Hotel, Restaurant, and Related Trades Employees’ Industrial Association of Workers.

Air Force Day The Minister of Defence (the Hon. T. L. Macdonald) said last night that Air Force Day will be observed throughout New Zealand on September 16 and Battle of Britain Week from September 11 to 17. Major R.N.Z.A.F. stations will be open to the public on Air Force Day and during the week flying displays will be staged, highlighted by a special fast flight from Dunedin to Auckland by Mosquito aircraft of No. 75 Squadron.

Teak from Historic Ship A block of teak from H.M.S. Iron Duke, Earl Jellicoe’s flagship in the Great War, was presented to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron at the 79th annual in Auckland last night. From it will be carved a mount for a trophy given to the squadron by Mr B. Windeler, of Bradford, for the annual round-the-island race. The teak is 15in square by 6in deep, and is the gift of Commander McKenzie, of Scotland. It was brought to Auckland by Dr. F. Mackay, a former commodore of the squadron—P.A.

Land Settlement Preference The conference of the Dairy Board in Wellington yesterday adopted a remit from the National Dairy Federation on the settlement of former servicemen in the following terms: “With full appreciation of the need for land to he made available for bona fide young farmers, this conference is of opinion that those with overseas service should still receive priority. It considers that the lists of those who are entitled to this priority should be closed in March, 1951. This conference also believes that every effort should be made to speed up land settlement in general.—P.A.

Aspects of English Farming Aspects of modern farming in England, compared with those during the 1914-18 war, were given by Mr J. H. Grigg who has recently returned from a visit to the British Isles, to a meeting of the Hinds Young Farmers Club recently. Mr Grigg, in the course of a-most interesting address, stated that at Home farmers were employing many more farm , workers and adapting much more farm machinery, so increasing production and breaking land in, which had formerly been declared arid and useless. Mr A. Davison (chairman) presided over an attendance of 28 members who asked Mr Grigg numerous questions regarding the meat and wool industry in England. Mr M. G. Davidson (district chairman of the Y.F.C.), explained the allocation of points for the interclub competition with a view to a higher standard of general club activities and field days.
