THE WEATHER

FROST HINDERS THAW

Following a frost of 12.8 degrees in Ashburton this morning, the snow in the town showed only'slight signs of thawing, in spite of bright sunshine. A cold northerly breeze had an adverse effect on temperatures. Yesterday the thermometer rose to 36.6 degrees, with the minimum at 25.2 degrees. Rain to the extent of 69 points fell during the 24 hours to 9 o’clock this morning. Other readings taken this morning were: Earth temperature 36.1 degrees, barometer reading 29.96 inches. 1 Snow in Domain Because of the snowfall the representative Rugby match between the touring Golden Bay-Motueka team and Ashburton which was to have been played on the Domain Oval was transferred to the No. 1 (top) ground. Owing to the frost this morning the snow on this ground showed little signs of thawing, so, with the aid of a tractor equipped with spikes, Rugby Union officials loosened the snow in the hope that it might melt, hut at noon only a slight thaw had set in. 1 The Domain was a scene of several minor spills this morning. Along the shingle tracks routes had been made yesterday by cyclists, but these had frozen this morning, and cyclists exercised the utmost caution. Practically all the roads in the town have been completely cleared, but lawns and gardens were still well coated although a thaw had set in. FAIR TO CLOUDY OUTLOOK (P.A.) . WELLINGTON, This Day.
