GRAIN AND PRODUCE

COMMERCIAL *

LARGE SHIPMENT OF POTATOES The Ashburton grain, seed and produce merchants report that the seasonal quietness still prevails on the local market. A good demand for spring sowings is anticipated and most lines of high-testing grass and clover seeds have been sold for export. The large Government order for seeds will remove any good lines from the market. The oat market remains unchanged, but inquiries have been received for good quality barley. As large stocks are held, a clearance will prove welcome. It is confidently expected that 7000 tons of potatoes will be shipped to Australia in the. near future, but negotiations have not yet been completed. It is understood that if export is made, only the South Canterbury district will participate, as large surpluses of Arran Chief potatoes are grown in the nearby Waimate area. Oatsheaf chaff is still dull of sale, as no shipping space is available to the North Island.
