POLICE FORCE

RECRUITS WANTED ACCOMMODATION TO BE IMPROVED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 16. A recruiting campaign to obtain more policemen has been started by the Police Department and efforts are being made to improve the accommodation for single men and to provide more housing for married policemen. The strength of the Police Force had caused him much concern, said the Minister in charge of Police, Mr W. H. Fortune) to-day. The housing shortage and the inadequacy - of existing police barracks accommodation were limiting factors in the campaign for recruits, for it was not desirable to recruit men without having satisfactory living accommodation for them. Mr Fortune said that as the housing position improved, greater efforts would be made to recruit men for the Police Force. In the meantime, single men were to be permitted to live out of barracks if they had accommodation available, and the transfer of married men would be limited as far as this Avas practicable. He added that the Police Force as a career had much to commend it. Beat duty was not. the beginning and end of police work. With the increasing use of modern tele-communi cation methods, patrol cars, and scientific aids, police work offered a most interesting career, with attractive salaries and many avenues of promotion. , •
