CHARGE OF SEDITION
MAN SENT TO PRISON SYDNEY, Aug. 15. A sentence of nine months’ imprisonment was imposed this afternoon in a special Federal Court on William Fardon Burns, aged 38, publisher of a Communist newspaper, the “Tribune,” on one of three charges of publishing seditious words. Burns was found not guilty on the other two charges. In his judgment, the Magistrate said the words used by Burns in an article referring to the ban by seamen on the shipping of arms.for Korea were “the expression in the most emphatic and clearest possible terms, of an intention to design to promote in the minds of the people a feeling of hostility and disloyalty to the Government.” The Magistrate said: "In my opinion the words used go far beyond pointing out in good faith errors or .defects In. the Government or Constitution of the Commonwealth, with a view - to their reformation, and are far beyond lawful criticism aimed at any of the objects referred to in the submissions on Burn’s behalf.”
