METHVEN WIN DEBATE By a margin of nine points the Methven branch of the Junior National Party last evening defeated the Timaru branch in the final of the H Cup for inter-branch debating. The function was in the Orange Hall, and there was an attendance of SO persons, this number being swelled when the dance, which followed, started. The judge, Mr A. O. Edwards, expressed surprise at the high standard of debating attained by both teams, and complimented them on the sound arguments they put forward on the subject “That the emergence of the Trade Union Congress is in the best interests of the New Zealand Trade Union movement.” Mr Edwards awarded 273 points to the Methven team (negative) comprising Messrs D. Gerard (leader), M. Poff, G. Limbrick, while the Timaru team comprising Messrs D. Smart (leader), J. Stevenson and P. de Lacy were awarded 264 points. The chairman was Mr S. Rickard ,and the timekeeper, Mr J. Paterson.
