TRAGEDY AT CHERTSEY

MAN FOUND SHOT, IN HEAD A single man, aged 38, Evan Wallace Cameron, was found shot dead on a farm at Chertsey yesterday afternoon. A rifle was lying about three feet away. The inquest was opened before the District Coroner, Mr E. C. Bathurst, this morning, and adjourned after evidence had been given by one witness. Frederick William Ironsides, of Winters Road, Ashburton, gave evidence of identification. Deceased was a man of sound type, but witness had noticed that; in recent weeks, he had been rather depressed after an attack of influenza. About 3.30 yesterday afternoon witness received a telephone call from deceased’s mother (with whom he had been living) who said she bad found her son lying with a shot wound in the head. Witness went out to Chertsey immediately and saw the body lying in a field about a chain from the house. There was a wound in the forehead. A doctor arrived soon after and said that death had already occurred. Deceased had left the house about 3.15 to attend to some work on the farm. *

The inquest was then adjourned sine die.
