LAND TENURE

FARMERS SAID TO FEAR DISPOSSESSION

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 20. A suggestion that New Zealand’s farmers were influenced against increasing production by the possibility of the compulsory acquisition of their land was made at the annual conference of the dairy section of Federated Farmers to-day. It was said that the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. S. G. Holland) should clarify the position on security of tenure. Mr C. .T. C. Grant (Auckland) said that the Minister of Lands (Mr E. S. Corbett) had said in Auckland that the Government had no intention during the coming session of abolishing the provision for the compulsory acquisition” of land, and that he would not give an assurance that efficiently farmed land would not be taken; but the Minister of Labour (Mr W. Sullivan) had said that farmers had nothing to fear from the present Government. Farmers felt that their security was jeopardised, and it was time for a clear statement from the Prime Minister on the matter.
