WEDDING IN MADRID

GENERAL FRANCO’S DAUGHTER. MADRID, April 10. General Franco gave his 23-year-old daughter, Carmen, in marriage to-day to the Marquis de Villaverde, a 28-year-old Madrid surgeon, and a member of one of Spain’s leading families. The ceremony, which was attended by leading members of the Spanish Government and society, was performed in the chapeh of General Franco’s sprawling El Pardo Palace, formerly the Royal hunting Lodge, 10 miles north-west of Madrid, by the Archbishop of Toledo and Primate of Spain. The entire Cabinet Council, representatives of the Cortes, and the chiefs of diplomatic missions were among the 800 guests. General Franco wore the uniform of a Captain-General in the Spanish Army when he escorted the tall, willowy bride the few yards from the Palace door to the church, through two ranks of gaily uniformed Moorish lancers. The bride wore a 35-feet veil of white tulle attached to a tiara of pearls and diamonds topped by a spray of diamond flowers with pearl tips.

The young couple received a fortune in wedding presents, including a gold cross filled with precious stones, diamond earrings and' other valuable pieces of jewellery. The tables were loaded with silver coffee and tea sets and jewellery. Nearby Hvere priceless pieces of period furniture and a painting of General Franco by Spain’s leading portrait painter, Franco Benedito, which was sent by leading members of the armed forces.
