DEMAND FOR SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE (Rec. 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, April IF. The National Union of Teachers’ Conference to-day unanimously adopted a resolution calling for a substantial increase in teachers’ salaries. The union vice-president (Mr A. Ranville Prior) said that British teachers were so ill-paid that some had to work as waitresses after school to eke out a living. He forecasts a “catastrophe” for education: in Britain unless the standard of life for the teaching profession was improved immediately.
