FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the "Guardian,” April 12, 1900). Mount Somers Road Board —All the members of the Mount Somers Road Board were present at the monthly meeting. Mr Chapman presided. It was decided to recommend that the name of Mr E. B. Cooper be removed from the roll as occupier of certain properties and the name of Mr Benjamin Evans inserted instead. (The tender of Mr J. Milne .for shingling near Clent Hills, at Is 7d a yard was accepted.—Agricultural and Pastoral Association: A meeting of the general committee of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association was attended by Messrs G. W. Leadley (president), T. E. Upton, John Studholme, junr., John Gilmour, T. Bullock, E. Cookson, R. Millar, C. . Reid, J. Bonifant, James Bland and George Small. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” April 12, 1925). Farming Immigrants—Several immigrants have been settled on „ farms near Ashburton, and it is reported that they have proved themselves absolutely satisfactory. Most are men brought from English farms, and while the New Zealand methods may be vastly different from those to which they have been accustomed the newcomers are showing a keen desire to conform with local conditions. English boys for the farms are not obtainable, though there has been a considerable inquiry for such, based on the reports of the good work done by boys brought out to farms in North Canterbury and in the North Island.
