MARCHING AT DOMAIN NINE TEAMS COMPETE Precision and co-ordination, each essential for excellence in team work, and perhaps specially • so in marching, were strikingly displayed at the Mid-Canterbury marching championships Tield in the Ashburton Domain on Saturday afternoon. This was only the second championship meeting since the association was formed, and was an attractive spectacle. The large crowd present was appreciative of the delightful entertainment afforded by the nine teams which competed, and showed its gratification by frequent applause. The highlight of the afternoon was the parade of teams at the completion of the competitions, and. this was truly a pageant of colour. In the marching events the Balmoral (Timaru) team, which was second equal in the New Zealand championships at Christchurch, received topmarks, but the Penreith team, also of Timaru, put up a sterling performance to come within a half-point of the winners. Miss F. Hedley, leader of the Balmoral .team, who was adjudged the best leader in the A grade section on Saturday, won the New Zealand title recently.. Some teams showed, great improvement, arid the performances Of the, two .local teams which competed were very creditable. At the conclusion of the function the Mayoress (Mrs E. C. Bathurst) presented the prizes to the winning teams. The Ashburton Junior Pipe Band and the Ashburton Silver Band had a strenuous afternoon playing for the teams, but without each the competitions would not have been possible.
