POLAR BEAR LOOSE IN ZOO

TWO KEEPERS MAULED BEFORE ANIMAL WAS SHOT MELBOURNE, March 15. A tliree-year-old polar bear severely mauled two of its keepers before it was shot dead after a desperate struggle at the Melbourne Zoo to-day. The bear, which had escaped from its cage while its pit was being clean ed, attacked one keeper. Five men with .pitchforks, iron bars and a shotgun raced to the rescue, but they could not free him. Four rounds were fired from the shotgun, but the bear took no notice. The bear then turned on another keeper and was attacking him when the zoo miniature train driver shot the animal with a rifle at the second attempt. The two keepers were admitted to hospital suffering from multiple lacera tions. One is in a serious condition.
