OPINION ON CHINA’S UNO DELEGATES NATIONALIST ■SPOKESMAN PROTESTS (N.Z.P. A.—Copy right) NEW YORK, March 14. The Chinese Nationalist Government to-day sharply criticised the Secretary-General of the United Nations (Mr Trygve Lie) for his stand on China. Mr Lie recently issued a memorandum suggesting that the only way to settle the problem of who should , represent China in the United Nations was to decide whether the Nationalists or the Communists held real power in the country. Dr. T. F. Tsiang, head of the Nationalist delegation to the United Nations, in a letter to Mr Lie, lodged a formal protest from his Government. He said that free China was struggling on several fronts. One of them was the vitally important United Nations front. • “Your memorandum is a deliberate attack on this front,” said Dr. Tsiang. “In time, it will be recognised also as an attack on the cause of freedom throughout the world.” Dr Tsiang said that the existence of the Nationalist Government was stopping the Communists from throwing their full weight into expanding towards South-east Asia. “If it is too much to expect you to use your influence against Communism, it is certainly not too much to expect you to remain at least neutral in a world struggle,” Dr. Tsiang continued. Mr Lie, by favouring the Communists, had destroyed public confidence in United Nations officials. * ' Dr. Tsiang added: “To-aay, with such bad politics and bad law, you have intervened against the interests of my country . To-morrow you can do the same thing against the interests of other countries.”
