LOOKING BACK

FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 16, 1900). Important Sale of Stock—The most important sale of purebred Shropshire Down sheep ever held in the colonies took place on Tuesday, when the Brown’s Farm flock was dispersed by auction at the homestead, Ashburton. This flock was built up with great care and expense by Mr G. G. Stead, and, together with the farm, was sold by him and his co-partner in the property, the Hon. J. T. Peacock, to a syndicate last year, and the latter are now realising on the estate. The foundation of the flock was laid by sheep purchased from Mr T. E. Upton, Sherwood, and rams by Mr John Grigg and Messrs Rowley and Hampton, Invercargill.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 16, 1925). Business Men’s Climb—A party of four Ashburton businessmen (Messrs W. H. .Rundle.'E. H. Orr, J. B. Christian, and F.( Smallbone) climbed Mount Taylor yesterday, and the day being a very clear one, a glorious view of the* plains was obtained from the top, which is 72Cfb feet above sea level. The party left Ashburton on Saturday afternoo% and after a tlireehour climb up the base reached the Alford Hut on the Wintersloe station. Here they stayed the night and set out in the morning accompanied by a pack horse, which was generously lent them by the manager of the station (Mr Chapman). After a stiff climb of five hours’ duration the party gained the summit. There was very little snow on the range.
