PUBLICITY FOR N.Z. IN UNITED STATES

AMERICAN VISITOR'S VIEWS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 11. A visitor to the Dominion, Dr. C. B. Lewis, of St. Cloud, Minnesota, a brother of the famous author, Mr Sinclair Lewis, considers that it is unfortunate that so little is known of Australia and New Zealand in tlie United States. He skid that he dopbted if one out of every 10 in his hofne town of 30,000, could say where, for instance, Tasmania was. Dr. Lewis spent Christmas in Florence, Italy, with his brother, after a tour of Britain and the Continent, and then decided to see Australia and New Zealand. “Write me more about Aus-. tralia and New Zealand,” the novelist urged Dr. Lewis in his letters. Dr. Lewis was amazed to find how far apai’t were Australia and New Zealand, and had had an idea that “you could step out the hack door in Australia, take a couple of jumps and find yourself in New Zealand.” He knew of only one man, in St. Cloud, barring possible servicemen, who had visited the Dominion.

“If I were a young man I would want to come either to this country or Australia. They are great new lands with wonderful opportunities offering. .‘'These ‘help wanted’ signs see along the streets are the grandest things about these two countries —the fact that you have the work offering and need more people to do it.” New migrants had “made” America. He believed in mixed races to produce drive and force in a country. “All the\restless, dissatisfied and nervous people of Europe seem to come to us and that fact had made America what it is. Those factors have produced a people, restless if you like, who forge ahead with the will to progress and achieve the best they can.”
