RAKAIA. EWE FAIR > #

PRICES HARDEN FURTHER / Prices well above those at Addington and the earlier fairs were paid yesterday at the Rakaia ewe fair. Most lines bought earlier by dealers were turned over at a profit, sometimes a very good profit. The entry was 6756,. including 643 two-iooths, against 10,050, including 2050 two-tooths last year. Once again, the offering, apart from the few standard lines which are always sold *at Rakaia, was made up of farmers’ cast ewes, and dealers’ lines bought at the earlier fairs or at Addington for resale at Rakaia. It was a very mixed selection of sheep, and contained few lines of reasonably good standard. The usual large "selection of ewes from Central Otago was forward on account of dealers. Most. of the entry was in fairly low condition, and early shorn. Few good pens were included among the two-tooths. Top price was 'G9s, paid for a pen of good Corriedales from M. S. Turton (Alford), which were several shillings dearer on quality than similar, sheep sold at Tinwald on Tuesday. A pen of open woolled ewes, sold on account of a client, made the same price, and a second pen on the same account made G3s. A pen bought at one of the northern fairs for about 545, made Gls. T. V. Wilkinson (Mitcham) sold 62 at 56s Gd. Among the older ewes, the principal attention was, as usual, given to the annual draft of E. J. F- Grigg’s Meadowbank ewes. They were four, six and eight-tooths, early shorn, and were in good order. They had their usual sound demand, and made from 31s for a small pen of culls, to 42s for gated 2304 this year, against 1050 last one of the top lines. The draft aggreyear, and the four largest lines, which totalled about 1700 head, made 40s or better. Last week the Meadowbank ewes made from 25s Gd to 325. W. A. Smith’s northbank annual draft came forward in excellent condition, but the mouths were a bit down. The fouryear line of 300 made 40s, and the older ewes 365. They made 30s to 31s last year. D. E. Grigg (The Dunes) received 40s for the top of the three lines he offered. Dealers’ lines of aged ewes made up to 455, and younger sheep to 48s. I
