BARRY WINS MEN’S SINGLES I TIMARU, This Day. After beating R. S. McKenzie in the semi-finals on Tuesday, J. A. Barry (Auckland) beat the national champion, J. E. Robson (Otago) G-l, 7-9, 0-4, 6-2 in the final of the men’s singles in the South Island tennis championships, which were completed yesterday at Timaru. The second ranked player in New Zealand, Miss E. Atwood, was all at sea in the wind in the final of the women’s singles against Miss V. Johnson (Auckland), and lost the match 6-1, 6-0 after a tame exhibition. The New Zealand doubles champions, McKenzie and Robson, won the South Island doubles title after a stirring battle with the Aucklanders, Barry and A. S. Burns, the match going to five sets G-2, 6-4, 2-6, 2-6, 6-1. Mrs E. L. I-lath-erley and Miss Thelma Poole proved too solid a combination for Mrs G. B. Beatson (Nelson) and Miss M. L. Kerr (Otago), and they won the doubles title in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. In the mixed doubles, M. Otway .and Miss J. Burke beat Robson and Miss Kerr in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
