THETA WAVES

DETECTION OF MURDERERS LONDON. Theta waves from the brains of anti-social individuals may be used in the future for the detection of potential criminals. The waves are received by a machine attached to the scalp, and automatically recorded on a chart. Dr. Fredhayden, and Dr. David Staf-ford-Clark, Medical Officers and Psychiatrist at Maudsley Hospital, London, claim that theta waves have emanated from the brains of more than 70 per cent, of unpremeditated murderers. - They base their conclusions on an examination of 64 killers, and add that nearly all those who had murdered for a clear-cut motive had normal waves.

Most children up to the age of four produce theta waves when they are annoyed, but the waves disappear when self-control is learned. In a report published in the British Journal of Neurology, Dr. Hayden and Dr. J. M. Stafford-Clark suggest that the machine should be acknowledged officially as a means of singling out criminals who should not be held fully responsible for their acts.—Reuter.
