About .16,000 Illinois and Indiana coalminers to-day baulked at returning to work but the rest of the country’s 480,000 miners dispelled rumours of a strike by re-entering the pits. Rumours circulated over the holiday week-end that Mr John L. Lewis (United Mineworkers Union chief) might stop work again to support his struggle for a new contract. This afternoon the Miners’ Union ordered the strikers to resume work next Monday.
