BRITAIN'S COAL
BIG PROFIT MADE LONDON, Nov. 11. The Minister of Fuel (Mr H. T. N. Gaitskell) told the House of Commons when it was debating last night the National Coal Board’s report j for 1948 that the board had made a profit of £G,500,000 in the first six months of this year.
Mr Gaitskell added that there was reason to believe that the improvement would be maintained for the rest of the year.
In 1947, the first year of nationalisation, the board lost £23,255,586. Last year there was a profit of £1,651,965.
Mr Gaitskell defended the policy of dual prices for, coal —domestic prices lower than export prices.
Mr. R. A. Hudson, for the Opposition, said that nationalisation of the mineia was affecting international relations. Britaip, he said, was being accused of sharp practice, for instance, for raising export prices. The Government's motion noting the board’s report was agreed to after an Opposition amendment had been defeated. *
