ASHBURTON MAN TO FORE
CRICKET
GRIFFITHS’ FINE SCORE
A fine innings of 96 by lan Griffiths, of Ashburton was the outstanding feature of the',final day’s play in the country cricket week at Christchurch yesterday.
Opening for the County B team against a formidable Canterbury team Griffiths showed a tenacious defence and was content to wait for the loose ball to score off. It appeared likely that Griffiths would score a century, but lie was beaten by a ball from A. T. Burgess, the former Plunket Shield player. The country team declared with four wickets for 224, and Canterbury, .batting, brightly, scored the required runs 10 minutes before time with seven wickets down. C. J. Harper, of Ashburton, took one for 34 as well as two catches, while Griffiths had a catch and a stumping to his credit.
• In the A team’s match, H. Cullen and C. Price both failed to score in the first innings, but Price shaped well in the second innings with 39 not out. Bowling for country, Price took two for 49 off 16 overs.
