STOCKING IMPORTS
INCREASE MADE IN ALLOCATION
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 11 Import licences for fully-fashioned hosiery, (nylon silk, art silk, and cotton) have been increased from 50 per cent, of .1949 to 100 per cent, of 1949, it was announced to-day by the Customs Department. The secretary of the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation (Mr G. Riley), commenting on this increase, said that while it was appreciated by the trade, it was far effort of Dominion requirements. The federation recently conducted a survey among a representative cross-section of women, and it was found that the average requirements of womenfolk OA r er 16 years of age was 12 pairs each year. “The federation is of the opinion that the Government has in mind the distribution of approximately six pairs by way of local manufacture and from imports, so that the reaeon for the continued shortage and lack of stocks is understandable,” said Mr Riley.
He added that it was estimated that at least 350 per cent, uf the 1949 licences would be necessary to meet reasonable consumer needs and enable traders to hold some baeic stocks.
