AMATEUR RIDERS
“CORINTHIAN HANDICAP"
SYDNEY. Twelve amateur riders from many callings, who took part in a “Corinthian Handicap,” the first of its kind held at a Sydney race meeting for 10 years, had little in common execept their love of horses.. They included a Chinese student from Malaya, a champion buckjumper and a bullock rider from Yass (a New South Wales country town), and a Sydney interior decorator. The Chinese student, Thoe Soon Long, hails from Kuala Lumpur. He is studying at Sydney University. Long said he had worked among horses most of his life. “In Malaya my father has a number of racehourses,” he said. “I have ridden three winners in Kuala Lumpur and two in Hong Kong.”
The rider from Yass said he came to Sydney especially for the race. The interior decorator said he had always had a horse.
One of Sydney’s leading professional jockeys said some of the amateur riders were expert horsemen. “However, many were slow away from the start,” he said. —Reuter.
