BAUXITE SUPPLY
PLENTY IN AUSTRALIA

The Australian Aluminium Commission has under its control proven bauxite deposits in Australia sufficient to maintain aluminium production at the rate of 10,000 tons a year for 100 years, according to the Commission’s fourth annual report.
The total ore under control of the commission now was approximately 8,600,000' tons, the report said. The report added that rising rail and sea freights on Australian material might place local ores at an economic disadvantage in 'comparison with higher grade bauxites from other parts of the world. Because of falling overseas shipping rates, it might prove more economical to use overseas ore. The report said the British Aluminium Company, Ltd., had agreed to become technical advisors and consultants for the Commission’s Bell Bay (Tasmania) aluminium project for a minimum period of ten years. Although no contract had yet been signed, the company was now advising and assisting the commission.
