LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 25, 1899). Sports Association—At a meeting of delegates to the Ashburton Sports Association last evening, the programme for the Association's first annual carnival was adopted. Following is a summary of events proposed:—Cricket match, 10 a.m. to conclude at 2 p.m.; tennis match, croquet match; cash and amateur cycling events; running, swimming and tug-of-war. A competition would he held for the best decorated cycle (lady’s or gent’s).

Musical Success —Ashburton bandsmen will learn with pleasure of the musical success of an ex-member of the Ist Canterbury Mounted Rifles Band, Mr Jack Maybury, who left some months ago to take up a position with a Wellington firm of electricians. Mr Maybury has become a player of the saxophone, and has engaged himself for a 35 weeks’ tour of the country with the “Follies.” It is understood that the company will be visiting the South Island.
