SEARCH FOR WEAPON
DEATH OF FRENCHMAN (P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Bay. A detachment of army sappers was expected to sweep North Beach at Piha with mine detectors this afternoon for the weapon which killed Jean Venot, the Frenchman 'whose body was found lying at high-water mark on Saturday morning. Nothing was found yesterday in spite of a thorough search by detectives. Luggage which Venot took with him when he left an Auckland private hotel on Wednesday morning has not been found, but papers and documents which belonged to the dead man were found floating in the sea near the cruiser Black Prince at the Devonport naval base last Thursday afternoon. A detailed examination showed that there were also holes in the towel wrapped round the head, which was tied in a half knot in such a way that the face was completely covered. A bullet wound near the right eye Avas caused ffiy a bullet of about 32 or 38 calibre.
