THREE CHILDREN SAVED
Trapped by Tide on Sandbank (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 24. Three children trapped by the rising tide on a sandbanic in Month's Day early this afternoon were saved by a young woman, Miss 11. Courtney, tne proprietress oi a hairdressing saloon in Monck’s Bay. The children, the eldest of whom she estimated to be about years old, had paddled out to the sandbank when the tide was out. The turning of the tide was not noticed by the children until the water was too deep for them to return to the shore. Hearing their' screams, Miss Courtney rushed to the shore and saw the danger they were in. When she arrived the children were running backwards and forwards into the water, undecided what to do. Although she was unable to swim, Miss Courtney ran fully clothed into the channel and waded in water nearly up to her neck to the children. She had to do this three times to bring the children to safety. Miss Courtney said last evening that had the children been left on the bank for another half-hour they would have drowned. Once they were safely ashore they went home quite happily. Miss Courtney was lent a change of clothing by a Redcliffe resident.
