MID-CANTERBURY BEAT CHRISTCHURCH Badminton of a high standard was seen in the Arcade on Saturday evening when the A team of the Christchurch Badminton Club 'was defeated by the Mid-Canterbury Club’s team for the first time for more than 10 years. The last 15 minutes of the match turned out to be the most exciting finish "in badminton history. With Christchurch leading the home team by 12 sets to 11, the last combined doubles to play was between V. Stokes and Miss Kay, of Christchurch, and J. Coward and Miss McLennan, of MidCanterbury. Coward and Stokes fought a very close duel until at 18 points all the local pair forged ahead to win 2118. This brought the set scores for the match to 12 all. The count back on points declared the Mid-Canterbury team as the winning side by the narrow margin of nine points, or by 389 points to 380. The outstanding game of the evening Avas fought between Noel Gosnell of Mid-Canterbury, and R. G. Pattinson, the top Canterbury ranking list player. Gosnell Avas leading his opponent 19-15. after a brilliant performance when Pattinson with deadly accurate placing - and drop shots succeeded in winning the game 23-20 after Gosnell hacl actually held match point tAvice.
