FINNISH SEAMAN FROM TANKER

CHARGE HELD OVER FOR THREE MONTHS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 23. A Finnish seaman, Arimo Olavi Karhunen, aged 20, appeared before Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day on a charge of being a prohibited immigrant. The Magistrate deferred the case for three months. Karhunen was placed under the supervision of the probation officer and ordered to work where directed. The Magistrate said it must be impressed upon Karhunen that the Court had not granted him a permit to stay in New Zealand. The Collector of Customs (Mr H. Thomas) said Karhunen applied for a permit to stay in New Zealand late in the afternoon of the day his ship, he Herbrand, sailed for Surabaya. He was told a decision could not be given before the ship sailed, but could be forwarded to him at Surabaya. It had been made clear to him that if he did not sail with his ship it would be a bad recommendation for his. application. Mr Thomas sought an order tor deportation.
