Ammunition Ship Explodes ? PORT OF TAKAO BADLY DAMAGED (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright). (Rec. 9.50.) HONG KONG, Aug. 23. Over 500 persons were killed this morning when the Chinese ammunition ship Shungli exploded at.Takao harbour, in Southeastern Formosa, says the official Chinese News Agency. Ammunition was being unloaded from the Chungli when the explosion blew it up, It shook the whole port and set fire to 10 warehouses and to two nearby ships, which later sank. The blast broke nearly every window in Takao and caused extensive damage. Terror spread through the city, which was darkened by smoke. Most of the dead and an unestimated number of injured were struck by flying shrapnel as shells aboard the Chungli exploded. The explosion occurred during the latter stages the unloading of 4000 tons of ammunition.
