ASHBURTON SILVER BAND
SOLO EVENING HELD Sixteen, competitors faced the adjudicator in the sacred solo contest conducted by the Ashburton Silver Band last evening in the hand room. At the conclusion of the competition'Mr R. Milligan (conductor) introduced Mr F. Turner, the adjudicator, and Mr C. H. Frew (supervisor) and thanked them for their services. He. also expressed thanks- to Mrs H. J. Chapman who officiated at the piano. Before announcing the points, Mr Turner gave some very helpful advice to the competitors. He also stated that.the standard of sacred solo playing was equal to, if not better, than any he had heard in Christchurch and the playing was very even throughout the competition. in Principal awards were:—J. lbell '(cornet) “Nearer My God to Thee,” 4S points 1 ; J. F. Davidson (euphonium) “Cast Thy Burden” and K. Olliver (bass) “How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings” 47 points (equal) 2; F. Lowry (i rouihotiG) “Lead Kindly Liglii',” 45 points 4; E. Randall (cornet) “Ora-Pro Nobis,” 44 points 5; A. T. Bright (cornet) “The Lord’s Prayer,” 43 points 6.
