JUNIOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
ADDRESS BY BOROUGH ENGINEER “Town Water Supply” was the subject of an address given by the Borough Engineer, Mr G. A. MacFarlane, to the Ashburton Junior Chamber of Commerce at its fortnightly meeting last evening. Mr MacFarlane traced the history of various types of water supplies from the days of the Romans up to tbe efficient systems in use at the present time. He mentioned the several sources of supply from which water could be made available to serve cities and towns, and finally gave members an insight into the system in use in Ashburton.
The average consumption in Ashburton, said Mr MacFarlane, was some 400,000 gallons daily or 60 gallons per person. The maximum demand since he had come to Ashburton, be continued, was 260 gallons per head a clay, while the minimum was 40 gallons per head. During peak periods an average of 10 gallons per head per minute had been recorded. Water for Ashburton’s requirements was pumped directly into the mains and only the surplus -went into the water tower which had a capacity of 52,000 gallons—sufficient for only two hours’ supply. Seventy per cent, of the water for Ashburton now came from the Farm Road well, Mr MacFarlane concluded. Backyard Rubbish Collection Speaking for the Civic Affairs Committee, Mr B. Smallbone reported on the , house-to-house collection of backyard rubbish conducted by the Junior Chamber on Saturday. The campaign had been a great success, he said, and proceeds from salvaging had amounted to £9 Is 4d. In recognition of the assistance given in the drive by the Ashburton Boy Scouts it was decided to make them a donation of £lO. Mr C. Anderson was chairman for the evening and Mr R. G. Ross was sheriff.
