COMPETITIVE SPORT ON SUNDAYS

CHURCH CONDEMNATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 20. The question.of-.the secularisation of Sunday by means of ' public sports gatherings and competitive games was keenly debated at a meeting of the Public and Social Affairs Committee of the Church of England. After the Bishop of Nelson had reported that in parts of his diocese football competition matches on- Sundays were a regular practice, the Bishop ,of Aotearoa (the Et. Rev. F. A. Bennett) said certain Maori sports associations devoted the whole of Sunday to competitive games. He had even known a public tennis tournament to be held throughout Good Friday. Members expressed appreciation of the attitude taken by many local bodies which prohibited organised public sports on Sundays in grounds under their control. A resolution proposed by the Bishop of Wellington was carried unanimously as follows: “This committee feels strongly that Christian people should abstain from participating on Sundays in public sports and competitive games. Further, the committee cordially supports the action of local authorities which refusfe to give permission for public sports and competitions on Sundays in grounds under tlieir control.
