LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 19, 1899). The Racing Club —Mr Hugo Friedlander has written to the chairman of the. Ashburton Racing Club to withdraw his name from nomination as one of the country clubs’ delegates to the Metropolitan Committee. Mr Friedlander considers it was a short-sighted policy for the committee of his club to have nominated two delegates, which lie states is causing friction between the country clubs in Canterbury, and in the interests of racing therefore considers it best for him to withdraw. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 19, 1924). Poultry Show —Users of Burnett Street were amused the other morning at tlie unconcerning strutting of a stray hen; but this morning a trio of geese promenaded the thoroughfare in single file, heads high, and delightfully careless of wheeled or foot traffic. Up and down and across the street they wandered, and finally reached a garage in Burnett Street, where they continued their promenade regardless of all the consequences.
