WHITE COTTON SUPPLIES
“SHORTAGE CAUSED BY PANIC BUYING” (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 16. Supplies of white cotton will show a definite improvement this month and future supplies are assured, according to the Wellington representative of a large British firm to-aay, when asked for a statement on the reasons for the current shortage. The i shortage, he said, had been mainly caused by panic buying by women who had heard rumours that white cotton would become short. In fact, there had been a drop in production, but nowhere near enough to account for the shortage during the last 12 months.
Retailers knew that some of their customers must have built up stocks to last them 12 months.
He said that import licences • were adequate for requirements.
