Good Friday Services LARGE ATTENDANCES Yesterday being Good Friday, church services were held in many Ashburton churches.
In the morning, a well attended combined service was held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church*. The Rev. S. D. Baird presided, and Mr A. D. Lowe spoke on “The Walk to Emmaus,” his text being, “And their eyes were opened, and they knew Him. Holy Communion followed. At the Church of the Holy Name the Mass of the Pre-Sanctified was celebrated in the morning, and the Stations of the Cross observed at 3 o’clock. At both services the Rev. Fathers Finnerty and O’Hara officiated. . .. At St. Stephen’s, services were held at 11 a.m., the vicar, the Rev. J. Evans, taking as liis text “And I, if I be lifted up, will draw all men unto me,” and at 7 p.m., the curate, the Rev. G. H. Shurr, preaching from the text “If Thou be the Son of God . . . save Thyself.” . In the evening a service was held at Baring Square Methodist Church, the Rev. W. T. Blight’s address being on the subject “The Seven Words from the Cross.” _. x At the Salvation Army Citadel an evening service was held, Captain Thomas’s subject being “A Divine Plan ” Readings covering the Easter story were taken by seven members of the corps, and appropriate music rendered. .
