MR FRASER LEAVES
LAST-MINUTE COMMENTS (Rec. 9.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, This day. The Rt. Hon. Peter Fraser joked and laughed with pressmen, photographers and- a crowd of about 200 wellwishers who were present at Mascot Aerodrome, late last night, to see Mesers Chifley and Fraser off to London, where they will attend the conference of British Commonwealth Prime Ministers.
Asked about the New Zealand Government’s opinion on the status of Eire in the British Commonwealth, Mr Fraser said: “I do not think Ireland will be discussed at the conference. I understand the question of her relationship is finished.”
Questioned about India, Mr Fraeer smiled and said: “I hope that we are not entirely devoid of ideas. We want India to remain 'in the Commonwealth. We hope it will be found possible for India to remain with the. same status and on the same basis as the rest of the Commonwealth nations.”
When asked if Australia and New Zealand would he presenting joint proposals' on the status of India, Mr Fraser said: “I cannot tell you that yet, for we do not know.”
